Welcome to the Early Years resource base. Please find below a selection of links and resources to support your children with their early development.
The resources below are to help our Reception parents / carers to support their children with early reading skills. Phonics is taught daily at Grange Primary School. We follow the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ phonics scheme. Children learn the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. We call these sounds ‘phonemes’. When phonemes are written down, they are called ‘graphemes’. Here are some resources to help your children learn their phonemes / graphemes for Phase 2 and Phase 3 (which they learn in Reception Autumn and Spring terms). Lots of revision will help your child to remember these, so they are ready to apply this knowledge when reading and writing.
These Phase 2 and Phase 3 pronunciation guides can be printed off at home. Please check that your child knows the phonemes in the guides.
These videos can support your child with their developing phonics skills. Watch them as many times as you like. Use them to check if your child recognises and remembers all the Phase 2 and Phase 3 phonics sounds. Can they think of a word containing each of the phonemes?
Phase 2 and Phase 3 Phonemes :
The skill of ‘blending’ is vital in order for children to become confident and fluent readers. These videos show how to blend separate sounds (phonemes) in order to read words. Can your child read the words by blending the sounds together?
Words that cannot be fully sounded out are known as ‘tricky words’. Look for the part of the word that is tricky and support your child to read the words. With lots of practice and revision, they will get there! Below are sets of tricky word cards for you to print off and use at home. These have been taught to our children during their Phonics sessions. Check which words your child can read automatically, and with which ones they require some support.
This informative PowerPoint presentation explains the Little Wandle Phonics scheme to Early Years parents and carers. It explains the scheme’s progression and gives detailed information about aspects of Phonics learning such as key vocabulary, expectations for reading, and so on.
