Drawing Room London Project

Home Drawing Room London Project

Art project in Spring 2022

Year 2 participated in a six-week collaborative Art project in Spring 2022 alongside ‘Drawing Room London’s ‘Rock Paper Scissors’ organisation. Each class worked directly alongside the Artists Sadegh Alef (Mars class) and Lucie MacGregor (Planet Earth) as well as their workshop assistants. Throughout the sessions we experienced materials and mediums that are important to these Artists, and we applied techniques modelled to us and discussed what Art is and which famous Artists have influenced them.

Intent

The intent of the project was for the children to experience using a range of different Artistic materials; to build children’s confidence and self-esteem and to express themselves and their feelings using Art.

Additionally, we were keen to develop a partnership with ‘Drawing Room London’ and to develop staff CPD and Art practices across our school and other schools within Southwark.

Implementation

Prior to the children’s workshops, school staff met the Artists, workshop Assistants and project co-ordinator, Betsy, in order to discuss and experience the Art activities that the Artists had designed. We discussed the likes/dislikes, current topics and potential cross curricular links and any specific needs of the children. This enabled the Artists to tailor their activities in order to successfully support the children’s learning and needs.

Mars class worked alongside Artist Sadegh Alef. He encouraged the children to improve their confidence and self-esteem; instilling in them a belief that ‘anyone can be an Artist’ and that Art is like ‘playing a game’. Children experienced and created art using mirrors to draw and see their environment in different ways; making shapes through dance using torches and mirrors and they created wire sculptures which children used to create shadows during a puppet show.

Planet Earth class worked alongside Lucie MacGregor. The children discussed different emotions and how to express these using Art. They focused on writing and drawing these, ripping them up and creating Papier-mâché sculptures. Additionally, they created ice sculptures using coloured water and paint and experienced the joy of breaking these and experiencing what happens when they are no longer frozen, as influenced by the Brazilian Artist, Néle Azevedo.

Impact

The six-week project culminated in a presentation to parents and carers where the Artists, project co-ordinator and children presented the Artistic sculpture which they had created and the skills they had learnt. The children were able to explain and demonstrate all that they have learnt using the correct technical vocabulary while modelling to others what they are able to do.

During the celebration, Artist Sadegh unveiled a sculpture called, ‘Fragments of Migration’ (2022) – a collaboration between the children and himself. This will now be a permanent fixture in our school grounds.

Artist Lucie created a wonderful brochure of images and information for the children to keep.

Year 2 Staff are now working directly alongside ‘Drawing Room London’ in order to plan and deliver CPD sessions for other members of staff and other schools in Southwark, inspiring a future generation of Artists to come!

‘Art is an experience’– (Cheryl Mars Class 2022)

‘You can use your imagination and make exactly what you want’ – (Daniella Mars Class 2022)
