Last Friday afternoon the Girls’ Football Team took to the field for the first time this year in a three team tournament at Archbishop Sumner Primary School (ABS) in Kennington.
The girls’ opening game was against St John the Divine Primary (St.JD) and the girls were in control from the start. With the skilful Antela, Selam and Mahaylia rock solid in defence, the opposition had no way through, leaving Samara with little to do. Up front Krystal and Saphire (the dynamic duo) were in great form, but just could not get the ball in the net. It was 0-0 at half time. The second half started the same as the first and within minutes Grange took the lead. A tough tackle in midfield by Antela enabled Saphire to get a shot away and beat the keeper to make it 1-0. Moments later Saphire added a second and the game finished 2-0.
In the opening game ABS beat St. JD 6-0, so the girls were a little nervous for this game. ABS were tough and it was a gruelling battle with both teams pushing for an opener. Samara was kept busy and had the game of her life. Whether the ball went high, low or even behind her, she somehow managed to grab it, making save after save. Amani, Isabelle and Saphire put some great passes together. Fauzia and Mahaylia again were superb. Antela and Selam were passing and dribbling with ease showing a touch of class. The game however finished 0-0. Penalties were required to decide the winner and Grange made no mistake to end up winning 4-3.
