Our boys’ football team were in action this evening against Archbishop Sumner Primary. Playing a school that we have never played against in any sport, our boys did not quite know what to expect.
A solid start from Rico in goal saw him pull off some great saves early on to keep us in the game. With the boys struggling to get a foothold in the game, Archbishop Sumner captitalised on some poor passing to take a 1-0 lead, which was quickly followed by a long range effort to make it 2-0.
Our boys now had to stand strong before the game “got away” from them. Changes in midfield saw a more attacking team on the pitch. This allowed Nazai and Alpha to start working together to find away back into the game. The increased pressure finally gave in as Nazai grabbed one back just before the break.
At half time the team aired their views on what was going wrong and a much stronger side came out in the second half. Adejola and Kaiden were now winning every ball in defence, allowing Ivan to come into the game and control the midfield. With five minutes to go, the game was level at 3-3 and looked like it would end in a draw, but it was Archbishop Sumner who grabbed a fourth to lead 4-3. The game looked lost, but in the dying seconds Nazai was sent through on goal. With only the keeper to beat he slotted just inside the left hand post as the referee blew for full time.
Nothing could separate both teams which meant it was down to penalties to decide the winner. Both teams traded shots with one scoring and the other missing. The shoot out went on in to “sudden death” and it was our boys who stayed strong, as Jonayed stepped up to slot home the winning penalty. Final score 4-4, Grange won 6-5 on penalties.
